LearnHub for Nuvvo Users

for

During LearnHub's initial development, we took into account Nuvvo's strengths and weaknesses. Our goal was to replace Nuvvo with a platform that achieved the same objectives but improved upon Nuvvo by creating an open-ended educational destination.

As a result, we have a service which combines the best of Nuvvo with a host of new features that are combined into a community-oriented learning platform that is suited for everyone's needs. LearnHub is a place for instructors to teach, students to learn, and people to connect.

What stayed the same?

Courses allow instructors to create a structured curriculum of content using the features LearnHub offers. By using access restrictions you are in charge of who can enroll and how they do it. Courses can be free, or you can charge for them. As the main focus of LearnHub, courses are a key feature we have dedicated a lot of time improving upon.

Lessons remain the core of LearnHub. They are easy to write and your key way to spread knowledge. A high-end Lesson Editor that emulates any modern day word processors (such as Microsoft Word) has been developed to ease the process of lesson creation. You can add pictures, flash, links, and much more to comprise top quality content.

Videos are an engaging way to spread visual knowledge. Today's technology allows almost anyone to record great quality images and upload them to the internet seamlessly. Unlike Nuvvo, where your videos streamed in QuickTime format, we are using the latest and greatest technology to stream video faster, larger, and better quality.

Marketplace is a public bulletin for instructor made courses and online tutoring. Unlike Nuvvo, which acted as a listing to specific course portals, LearnHub offers a self-service  community driven Marketplace. A topical community can be a headway to the Marketplace containing your courses or tutor offerings.

Tests are an effective way to quiz your students' knowledge with multiple choice questions. Track how well a member retains your lesson by linking a test at the end. If a user is having trouble with a test, they can re-read your lesson or discuss it in more detail with other members. We've focused on improving the testing layout, making it more user-friendly for both student/instructor, as well as enhancing the reporting features.

The New Features

Topical Communities are user lead communities focusing on specific subjects. You'll find communities from Biology, English, and Math to Photography and Design. If you don't find a community that interests you, create your own. This is one of the most substantial improvements from Nuvvo to LearnHub and we're proud to offer you the increased flexibility.

The Workspace is your central working environment. All registered members own a workspace, which is also your personal profile. Each community you join, and every course you create shows up in your Workspace. Your Workspace is where people will go when they want to learning more information on you, so share a little about yourself; upload an image, even add your favorite books.

Organization Workspaces was developed so you can create a separate space specifically for your school, group, or business. This feature, a combination of a Community and a Workspace, allows users to join and have special access to private material and discussions. Organization Workspaces are perfect for business's looking to train their employees, or schools who want to offer content and courses solely to their students.

Discussions are the central location to share your opinion, ask questions, discuss news, or expand on lessons with other members of the community. Create your own topic or join in on another members discussion. Talk about anything you want. Every community has its own discussion board which can be read by anyone, though only community members can post.

Debates are a great way to create interactive positional discussions. Create topics members can "Agree" or "Disagree" on. As a participant, form your opinion and stick by it! Remember, as a debate you need to persuade the other side to agree with you.

Presentations are the ideal way to share your slide shows with members. You can import any of your Microsoft PowerPoint presentations (or relating software) into the system where they are converted into the Flash format. Presentations stream fast and are extremely small in download size. So feel free to add video, music, speech - and as much media content as you wish.

The Activity Feed is a great way to keep in the know with all the action happening throughout LearnHub. See what your contacts are up to, or track the progress of the communities you are a member of. You'll be provided with information onthings like when a course is created, a lesson is rated, a quiz is taken, and much more.

Live Tutoring is an highly regarded new feature that allows instructors to tutor students online using a White Board system. Connect face to face via web cams, vocally with microphones, share documents, and write on a white board. Much like a course, you can offer your tutoring for free or for a fee.

Trivia is global topic game that anyone can play. Answer random user-generated trivia, keep track of your scores and try to make it to the top of the leader board. You can also contribute your own trivia and keep track of how many users you've stumped with our statistics tracker.

Concept Attainment is puzzle game based on simple "yes" and "no" answers. Using the clues given, you must guess the subject. This great game offers you and easy way to engage your community members - and generate a little member competition.

Authority can also be considered your LearnHub reputation. The more engaged and well-regarded you are the higher your authority rating will rise. This is a great tool both for instructors and students. As an instructor, the higher yur authority, the more willing students will be to join your communities, read your lessons and enroll in your courses. For students, authority ratings can be used to gauge which instructors will give you the best value for your time and money.

Contacts are a great way to keep in touch with your friends and colleagues. You can also send private messages to any of your friends via your Inbox.

Languages are now available. You can create and search for communities in other languages through our Communities area. LearnHub is an international site with no restriction on language.

Getting Started

Now that you're up to date on all the new and returning features. No doubt you are ready to get started creating your very own community and uploading your content. To help you adjust to the new platform, I've listed some "first steps" for you below:

Register and Edit your Profile
1. If you haven't already, head over to the sign up page and register an account. LearnHub is free to join - all you need is a valid E-mail address.
2. After creating your account, edit your profile. Upload a picture, write a little about yourself, add your favorite quote. The more you let students get to know you, the more trust your authority as a teacher will be.

For additional help registering and editing your profile, read How to: Getting Started.

Join your first Community
1. Find a community that interests you. You can easily browse a list of communities or search for specific tag words through the Communities section.
2. Once you've found an interesting community, simply click on the title to enter.
3. You can join a community by clicking the Join This Community button found to the left of the page.
4. Browse around, see whats been posted.

I recommend all new users start by joining the LearnHub Support community. The support community is packed with useful lessons and information. It is also an idea place to turn for advice if yu come across any problems along the way.

For additional help, read How to: Communities.

Participate
Read a lesson, comment on it; create a discussion; play some trivia. Get accustom to all the features, see what they offer, and start thinking about how you can use these when adding content to your very own community. What will work? What wont?

Create your first Community
Your ready to create your community. For a in-depth how to guide with plenty of questions and answers I suggest reading the How to: Communities

Start your community off by adding a community image and a creative description. These are two major initial attractions to your community when a user is browsing through a large list of results.

Create your first Lesson
Now that your community is set up, it's time to create your first lesson. How to: Lessons provides an in depth guide that offers everything you need to create a fantastic lesson.

Feel free to be as visual and creative as you would like. There is no limit on the number of images you can upload. Lessons are most effective as short, to the point tutorials that offer your members the information they seek. We recommend no more than 2 pages. Offering a large cache of topical lessons can be more useful then covering a huge amount of information in a single lesson.

What makes a Successful Community?

There is no magic formula to creating a successful community, but there are a number of factors that can start you in the right direction. A lesson breakdown has been written with all the information you will need to know. To read it, just follow this link.
