How to: Rich Text Editor

The Rich Text Editor is a lesson page creation tool that emulates popular Word Processors. If you’ve ever used programs such as Microsoft Word, you won’t have any trouble creating top of the line lesson page content.

Using the Editor to Create a Lesson Page:

Q. What are the advantages of the Rich Text Editor?

If you’ve ever written a document in Microsoft Word or a similar word processor, you will find the Rich Text Editor to your liking. It was built for the common content creator because of its ease of use. It supports many advantages:

  • Plenty of formatting tools.
  • Edit the page in real-time (see exactly what it will look like published).
  • Add images and links easily.
  • Upload reference PDFs.
  • Publish your content with Creative Commons protection.
  • No need for HTML or Textile knowledge.

You can start a new lesson page by following these few easy steps:

  1. Log in to LearnHub or Create an Account.
  2. Click the Lessons Tab in your personal Workspace.

Q. What is the Textile Editor?

There are two types of lesson editors: the Rich Text Editor and the Textile Editor. The Textile editor is the advanced “pro” editor that uses HTML and Textile coding. If you’ve had previous experience writing HTML you might find the Textile Editor more to your liking.

If you wish to learn more about the advanced editor, read the How to: Textile Editor.

Q. How do I switch between the Rich Text Editor and the Textile Editor?

You can switch between the the Rich Text Editor and the Textile Editor by heading to the Account settings in your personal Workspace. You will find the option to switch right on the main section.

Q. Can I copy and paste my lesson from another source such as a word document or a website?

Yes. If you prefer to create your lesson using a 3rd party program you may copy and paste your text to LearnHubs editor. The Rich Text editor recognizes most formatting, your lesson should look exactly as you’ve written it the other program.

Please note, some more advanced formatting may not carry over. If this happens, simply highlight the text and format it within the Rich Text Editor.

Please also note that if you copy and paste from a website, images WILL copy over. If you copy and paste from a word processor, images will NOT copy over.

Q. Can I add additional formatting after I’ve copied my text over?

Of course. All text maybe formatted once placed into the Rich Text Editor. If you wish to remove all formatting from a string of text, you can use the “Reset Formatting” button under the Font Styles.

Publishing your Lesson Page:

Q. How do I publish my lesson Publicly?

You can find the Publishing widget near the top of the lesson editor underneath the ‘Page Information’ widget. The default setting is automatically set to ‘No, not yet’.

In order to publish the lesson publicly, simply choose ‘Yes, publicly in my Workspace and other areas’. Doing so will bring a list of communities you are currently a member of. Add a check mark next to the communities you wish to publish your lesson in.

You may also select Courses you wish to publish the lesson to.

Q. How do I publish my lesson Privately?

You can select the “Privately, in one or more courses” option in the Publishing Widget in order to publish your lesson page to a course. When you publish a lesson this way, no one other than the members enrolled in your course will be eligible to view your lesson. It will not show up in your Workspace to anyone but you. If a member leaves your course, it will again be private to that user.

Q. Can I un-publish my lesson after I’ve published it already?

Yes, simply edit your lesson page and select the ‘No, not yet’ option in the Publishing Widget and your course will become unpublished and not viewable in any community, course, or your personal workspace.

Q. What Creative Commons License should I choose?

There is a lot to consider when choosing a Creative Commons license. Do you want to share your lesson so others many use it and edit it? Or do you wish only to have it viewed on LearnHub?

To learn what each license means and how to apply it, please read the Licenses lesson.
